Styling for Life… A New Look on Health…
The Styling for Life (SFL) program utilizes the intimate relationship between hair stylists and their clients as a way to increase awareness about breast cancer through education. Hair stylists serving the African American community are trained to become health education resources, or “life stylists,” for their clients, not only educating them on breast cancer and the importance of early detection and screening, but also empowering them to make appointments to get their mammograms and clinical breast exams.
Why is Styling for Life Needed?
- In 2005, an estimated 19,240 new cases of breast cancer are expected to occur in African American women.
- Breast Cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death among African American women, surpassed only by lung cancer.
- Although less African American women are diagnosed with breast cancer compared to white women, African American women experience a much higher death rate.
- African American women are more likely to have a later stage diagnosis, which significantly lowers survival chances.

How Styling for Life Works
During a client’s styling appointment, life stylists engage in an educational conversation on breast cancer early detection and screening. Most importantly, the life stylists empower their clients to make appointments to get their mammograms, clinical breast exams, pap and pelvic exams, and to do monthly self-breast exams.
